What is Acupuncture?
As part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Acupuncture takes a holistic approach; treating the person as a whole rather than concentrating on a specific area. TCM teaches that good health is achieved through balance, and acupuncture seeks to restore this balance.

Our good health is a complex and subtle integration of our physical strength, mental clarity, emotional wellbeing and core feelings of security. Any number of factors, both internal and external, can upset that balance and restoring it is the focus of any Acupuncture treatment.

How does it work?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into the skin at predetermined points, to affect the internal levels of energy. Energy may be deficient, excessive or stagnant and therefore not flowing in the most efficient manner. When energy (called Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine) is not in balance then we begin to observe an adverse effect. Some symptoms are obvious, such as those affecting the physical being, others less so, such as those that affect the emotional and mental wellbeing.

What happens in a treatment session?
An acupuncture session lasts around 45 minutes and the needles are usually in for around 15 minutes. The rest of the session is taken up with diagnosis. Acupuncturists diagnose by asking lots of questions about all areas of your life both past and present. This is a collaborative process, which is gentle, organic and thought provoking.

Can acupuncture help with fertility?
Acupuncture can play a big part in fertility in a number of ways: It can be used in pre-conception to help prepare the body to be as strong and healthy as possible (after all, healthy parents make healthy babies!). It can be used to help regulate periods and address menstrual symptoms. Acupuncture is regularly utilised by woman undergoing assisted fertility treatment, as it can minimise the side effects of the drugs taken as well as work on the patient’s general physiology. As with any kind of Acupuncture, it is important to understand that this treatment doesn’t just concentrate on those parts of the body concerned with fertility, it treats the whole person.
